How to turn off the EDGE for iphone 3G

by on Jul.24, 2008, under Tech blog

Macau is my current working location, and I DON’T get free GPRS for my Pay-as-you-go plan. I tried to put a empty value in the APN setting , it can still use the EDGE service with its own detection. And I have been riped off $50 (US$ 7) at the first day. And finally, i can stop it from request data by doing the following setting.  I would like to share this method to the people has the same situation.

  1. go to -> Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network
  2. In the APN field , enter a Dummy value , like “NOAPN”, and that’s it.

You can restore the EDGE if you wanna use the service later on.  Hope it can help someone to save a beer.

iphone 3G review after one-day usage

by on Jul.24, 2008, under Tech blog

I am so happy to get this device in hand, since i was the first-gen iphone user as well. In here, I need to provide some casual facts that i like this device.

  1.  A Good 2G basic phone ( not classified as a 3G since there is no video conferencing)
  2. A good email client for most of the webmail service (except Hotmail/Live Mail)
  3. The best internet mobile device
  4. multi-touch screen to let the user interact faster than other device
  5. Chinese handwriting input
  6. GPS to locate the current position in the earth
  7. Apps Store to let developer like me that to create or to get apps easily
  8. A decent camera to take photos with friends

Although it is so great, there are still cons about it.

  1. Camera is only 2-mega pixels
  2. Auto reset / reboot itself if you try to doing too many things at the same time
  3. Apps deliver conflicts with itune
  4. the first-gen iphone docks doesn’t fit it in
  5. EDGE can’t be turn off to save money
  6. Notes doesn’t sync to my Mac in anyway
  7.  The contact search bar is on the top of the contact list (not floating on top while you search contacts)
  8. Hong Kong Apps store doesn’t come with all Apps that US had. ( I mean even some Free Apps is US or Europe Only Apps)
  9. Wall paper inside the interface can’t be changed

Got it, Finally up and running

by on Aug.20, 2007, under Prog blog

This post should be released on Friday night as everything in this post was happened on that night. Since some VIP come to my area, I just got time to write it 2 days later. :-)

My Fedora finally setup on my Dell with beautiful GUI “Compiz”. Yeah, my dream comes true, although it’s not a big one. And I would like to share some steps of my installation in order to let anyone if there are problems to them.

All the steps is not in very details since it won’t be too specific to my system only.

1 . You get a Intel Dell with NVIDIA 3D card installed, mine is 7900GS 256M

2. Install the fedora 7 (mine is 7.9) for x86_64 with any package except virtualization, the main point is to ensure the kernel is original kernel , not with “Xen”, since Xen will be installed if virtualization is selected. Please install the Development tools as well. Xen is not support for the NVIDIA driver(NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run) in this version.

3. After install the fedora, go to console (init 3), and install and compile the NVIDIA drive. Please let it install everything include OpenGL drivers and the X configure files.

4. If the Driver can’t fine the source for the kernel, please use –kernel-source-path to point out the kernel source for it, (most likely will local in /usr/src/kernels/2.6.21-1.3194.fc7-x86_64) and i hope it will be fine for you to have the driver compile and installed.

5. Reboot it and back to the fedora Xser (Xwin). And use YUM to update all the packages except Xen kernel. And use YUM again to install a Beryl-Mega-Pack for x86_64. After the installation, the Beryl, Compiz (Window managers) should be installed at this moment. Please notice that the Beryl is not working for me at all, so i prefer don’t touch it for this reason.

6. Go to the System, Look and Feel section, and turn on the Desktop Effect. And reboot the machine. After that the Fedora should has a fantastic GUI.

7. Enjoy and play with it.

This is a great start for me, and i hope i can share some more my experience in tuning it in near future.
