Knowing less when growing up, Thinking more when time is limited
by Brian Yam on Jul.24, 2009, under Daily blog, Prog blog
After being a programmer for years, gaining different kind of experience and knowledge. I should feel I am a “senior grade” programmer. But it’s not the truth. The fact is, sometime, i felt that the world is too big for me, too much information , times passed so fast too. In the time I am growing up, the world grew even faster. It’s a bit hard to catch up sometime. Like my current position, as a programmer. There are so much choices for you to do a better jobs (better means faster, simpler, useful). And the number of choices sometime is the big obstacle, because you never know it gonna be the right/best choice, and end up waste most of the time in thinking which path has the most advantage for you.
And this weekend, I remembered this approach is not totally right. When i was teenage, i never think twice to do whatever i want, and “Just Do it”. So, I hope this article is a reminder for me, let me balance two extreme way, and use my time wisely from now on.
Let’s Rock!! 2 hours to go for ADC
by Brian Yam on Sep.10, 2008, under Prog blog
Still have 2 hours to go for the next conference for Apple Conference. I think those conference always catch my eye not only the by their product but its idea. Nowadays, computer world is a lighting-fast growing industry, there are so many technologies involved at any moment. Although it would be hard to catch up, it’s worth to have the insight of all those successful stories. All of them have one common essential, “IDEA”. All of them is not a thing to scare people from joining them. In reverse, they are easy to adopted, easy to learn , easy to share, easy to use and apply. Examples like computer language, Rails and Ajax, API like Google API, ExtJs, Scriptaculois, Application like iTunes, Skype. All of those is using existing technologies but reworked to and built for people. And this is the trend for the computer world, at least for the internet world. “People” is what we should target for.

Got it, Finally up and running
by Brian Yam on Aug.20, 2007, under Prog blog
This post should be released on Friday night as everything in this post was happened on that night. Since some VIP come to my area, I just got time to write it 2 days later.
My Fedora finally setup on my Dell with beautiful GUI “Compiz”. Yeah, my dream comes true, although it’s not a big one. And I would like to share some steps of my installation in order to let anyone if there are problems to them.
All the steps is not in very details since it won’t be too specific to my system only.
1 . You get a Intel Dell with NVIDIA 3D card installed, mine is 7900GS 256M
2. Install the fedora 7 (mine is 7.9) for x86_64 with any package except virtualization, the main point is to ensure the kernel is original kernel , not with “Xen”, since Xen will be installed if virtualization is selected. Please install the Development tools as well. Xen is not support for the NVIDIA driver(NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run) in this version.
3. After install the fedora, go to console (init 3), and install and compile the NVIDIA drive. Please let it install everything include OpenGL drivers and the X configure files.
4. If the Driver can’t fine the source for the kernel, please use –kernel-source-path to point out the kernel source for it, (most likely will local in /usr/src/kernels/2.6.21-1.3194.fc7-x86_64) and i hope it will be fine for you to have the driver compile and installed.
5. Reboot it and back to the fedora Xser (Xwin). And use YUM to update all the packages except Xen kernel. And use YUM again to install a Beryl-Mega-Pack for x86_64. After the installation, the Beryl, Compiz (Window managers) should be installed at this moment. Please notice that the Beryl is not working for me at all, so i prefer don’t touch it for this reason.
6. Go to the System, Look and Feel section, and turn on the Desktop Effect. And reboot the machine. After that the Fedora should has a fantastic GUI.
7. Enjoy and play with it.
This is a great start for me, and i hope i can share some more my experience in tuning it in near future.
Good start maybe the half the success

It was too tired to wrote the blog after site in front of the computer for 5 hour attempted to install some fancy OS with fancy interface. It’s the Linux Fedora 7.9 with Beryl 0.2, and Nivdia video driver has to be installed in order to put the interface up. I have used 3 hours to figure out the linux in Fedora using some 2.6.xxxxx.fc7-x86_64zen. The “zen” drive me crazy since there seems no kerenl source for me to build a proper Nividia driver. So i fall back to original “2.6.xxxxx.fc7-x86_64″ core inorder to compile the driver right. At least the driver is compiled and installed in the Fedora. I was really happy for this, since it works finally. And I go to the Yum to install Beryl…..there are always weird behavior on the “add/remove” function, yum is not quit reliable at some point, you need to declare the source (repository), otherwise the system halt. And after another 2 hours Beryl installed. And , i think you already know the result from my title, right? It’s not working. But I won’t give up for that, it will be up and running very soon!! Good luck to me.

by Brian Yam on Jul.31, 2007, under Prog blog
It’s a good news that the Joomla has finally install in the IIS6 today, what a day to celebrate. Joomla is a CMS (Content Management System) and it’s not quit fitted to IIS as I know……After fixing IIS , Virtual Host, PHP, ISAPI, GEOIP, and Joomla……finally get it running, ……..yeah.!
In the opposite , I failed to make the DSL(DAMN SMALL LINUX) to work for me at this moment.
…..Since my dad’s PIII notebook don’t like to boot itself from the USB Stick…..Damn. May be I need to buy a CDR later tomorrow to make it work…..What a Shame….
It will be great if a PIII with DSL , can compare to a Core-Duo with XP…..Please Please let me taste the power of linux…
